It’s a bit humorous to think that not too long ago things like the floppy disk, cassettes and even bulky MP3 players were the pinnacle of technology in their respective fields. But now, they are sorely outclassed by even digital streaming content.
Though throughout our technological era there are a few things that have so far survived the test of time. Headphones are one example. You plug in the 3.5mm jack to your audio devices and listen to sound directly to your ear. You can even modernize a bit and go wireless, but at the cost of possible low audio quality and interference. The latter statement is why all current smart phones still have the audio jack.
But then here comes Apple with their latest device, the iPhone 7. While it’s not officially confirmed, there’s strong evidence that the next generation iPhone will not come with the standard headphone jack. And of course the internet went abuzz.
At first glance it seems impractical. Sure, I’ve been using my wireless headphones for a few years now, but I always end up carrying wired earphones just in case the Bluetooth device dies on me. It’s also simply nice to have options. Those most affected by this rumor are the people who prefer and those who can only afford, wired headphones.
Apple ended up buying Beets headphones and have yet to do anything too good with the purchase, perhaps going jack-less will force Beets promotions to those who end up buying the iPhone 7. While it seems ridiculous, the Apple brand is known to always hit the mark with their sales.
Other rumors about this decision to go wireless include:
A smaller and thinner iPhone, so no room for a headphone jack.
A new iPhone shape that somehow prevents the need for a headphone jack.
Or maybe, just maybe, Apple has something in store for us that will be “revolutionary”.
Whatever the case may be, we will soon find out in their annual September event.
