The Peruvian Robert García, mayor of the city of Long Beach, won the election for the 42nd District of California to the United States House of Representatives, with which he will become the first openly homosexual Latino to reach Congress in Washington.
The Democrat doubled his opponent, Republican John Briscoe, in the partial results.
The Peruvian immigrant was elected as the first Latino mayor and the first openly gay in the history of Long Beach, an important city in Los Angeles County that is home to one of the most important ports on the US West Coast.
For more than eight years, Garcia has run the city and has become a visible face of California Democrats.
Born in Lima (Peru), García emigrated to the United States when he was five years old at the hands of his mother, Gabby O’Donnell, who died in July 2020 after contracting coronavirus at the age of 61.
Knowing his wide advantage, García posted a photo on his Twitter account last night with his mother, with the message: We did it.
At the campaign celebration, he also dedicated the victory to his mother, who taught him and his brother to love and fight for the United States.
“That fighter woman who worked in clinics, who cleaned houses, who was a true immigrant in every sense of the word, it is because of her that I am here today,” Garcia said.
The Peruvian will occupy the post of Democratic congressman Alan Lowenthal, who retires next January.
