On Women’s Equality Day recently, New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer presented Community Resource Center (CRC) Executive Director Jirandy Martinez with the New York Senate Distinguished Women Award 2022,” for being a lifelong advocate for social justice and immigrant rights.
“I am excited to present Jirandy with the 2022 Women of Distinction Award. Jirandy has been an indispensable force for structural social, political and economic change in the lives of immigrants in Westchester and throughout New York,” said Senator Mayer.
Mayer, who represents Port Chester, Bronxville, Larchmont, Harrison, Mamaroneck, Rye Brook, and Tuckahoe, as well as the cities of Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle, and Rye, explained that in the most recent Hurricane Ida last September, devastated Mamaroneck and destroyed the CRC Community Resource Center building, Jirandy and his team helped more than 300 community members whose lives were affected by the storm. “She is a tremendous force for good in our community and she is extremely deserving of this award.”
For her part, the director Martínez said that “I feel honored. This award is not only mine, it belongs to my team and the people. I hope other young women who identify as first-generation immigrants from working families are as proud and inspired as I am to receive this Women of Distinction Award. Yes you can!”.
A native of Mamaroneck and the daughter of Colombian immigrant workers, Martinez began her work with CRC in 2008 as an ESL teacher. Since she became CEO in 2016, she and her team have been dedicated to empowering low-income and immigrant families by providing them with the resources and advocacy to help them become self-sufficient and prosperous members of the community. CRC currently serves more than 3,800 people in Westchester County through direct grassroots services and partnerships with dozens of community organizations.
The New York State Senate Distinguished Women Award is presented annually to one woman in each Senate district for her outstanding contributions to the community. A virtual ceremony recognizing all 2022 honorees is available on the New York State Senate website. Senator Mayer has previously honored Elizabeth Baird Saenger, Rhiannon Navin and Nicole Scheindlin with this award.
