The New Rochelle Youth Department offered a job during the summer, in New Rochelle

New Rochelle
This summer, more than 250 New Rochelle youth ages 14 to 24 participated in the New Rochelle Youth Bureau’s Summer Employment Program, working in the fields of recreation, office, maintenance, data entry, food and personal care. Four specialized “Learn and Earn” programs gave participants a first-hand look at possible vocations.
New Rochelle Youth Bureau Executive Director Kelly Johnson said, “I thank my staff, our community partners and our summer youth employees who contributed to our tremendous success this summer.”

The Programs Made
Mentors in Blue Police Academy: Two dozen youth ages 14 to 17 spent the summer with members of the New Rochelle Police Department as part of the inaugural Mentors in Blue (MIB) collaboration. Designed to promote, encourage and maintain positive relationships between police officers and youth, MIB began in 2017 with annual police-youth forums that identified activities/events the two groups could do together, including group dinners at local restaurants, barbecues, bowling and team Olympics.
“When we have the opportunity to interact and engage with children, they see us as people and we get to know them,” said New Rochelle Police Commissioner Robert Gazzola.
GIRLS ON FIRE: This is the second year of “Girls on Fire,” which introduces young women to careers in firefighting and emergency operations. Young women visited all five of New Rochelle’s fire stations and the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Fire Training Center. There they observed operations, became CPR/AED certified and “Stop the Bleed” trained, and met professional firefighters who live and work in Westchester County.

FUTURE CEOS: With the goal of inspiring young people with core values, tools, and an entrepreneurial mindset, this summer a group of 25 students ages 14-18 participated in weekly topics including Finding Your Purpose, Researching Your Industry , Create a business Planning, Marketing and more.
Program highlights included guest speakers Jerron Love from Connectfy and Sachi VIP Spa, DJ Messiah from The Game Island, Tiffany Maciel from Jewlzfordayz, and young entrepreneur DJ SmityyBoy; and field trips to corporations, including TikTok’s headquarters in Manhattan.
ECOLOGY: Learn and Earn “Ambassadors of Ecology” introduced New Rochelle youth to the intricacies of the coast in our community through coastal exploration. The students spent their summer weeks along the waters of Long Island Sound, surveying and evaluating the flora and fauna; study of the geophysical and environmental conditions of the parks facing the sea; the design and engineering of possible solutions to mitigate environmental concerns and the establishment of systems for sustainability and conservation. This program was in partnership with the Booker T. Washington Vocational Institute and the City of New Rochelle Department of Development/Sustainability.
The Summer Youth Employment program was supported by funds designated by the New Rochelle City Council, the generous support of the community through the “Summer in the City” fundraiser, and the Cappelli Organization.
