The White Plains Cub Scouts Hispanic Center held its annual car competition on March 25, with the participation of boys and girls from 5 to 11 years of age, called the Pinewood Derby Annual, at the Mamaroneck Avenue School. , in White Plains. The 2005 Cub Scout Pack event had the participation of 20 pequeños who attended with their parents and dozens of members of the community.

“This is an annual activity for those ages, sometimes done in conjunction with another Blue Gold ceremony, as part of celebrating the anniversary of when the Cub Scout organization began, which was in 1930. Scouting in general began in 1908,” said Irma Rivera, Cub Master and Cub Scout coordinator.

They are a celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the BSA on February 8, 1910, and the beginning of cub scouting in 1930.

As Rivera explained, the competition involves each boy or girl building their own wooden cart with the support of their parents. During this process, they learn about aerodynamics, design, reading and following instructions, but most of all they have fun.

“They work for several weeks sanding, cutting, painting and the rule is that the cart does not weigh more than 5 ounces. The box (kit) with the parts comes with 3 ounces of weight and the children can put their ideas including making the car faster”, said Rivera.

The winner in the category of Best Design

Rank insignia and awards were given this year to celebrate the accomplishments of each Cub Scout.

“Kids compete by grade and we have the winners for each grade and at the end they compete for first, second and third place, and there is also a design award. This year we had three winners: first, second and third place and two that were for the best design”, explained the Cub Master, about the innovative, fun and very positive event for children.

This year was a tight end. First up was Christopher Castaño, a first-time runner and wolf pup (second grader); and in second and third place were brothers Dylan Cardozo (Arrow of Light cub, 5th grader) and Logan Cardozo (lion cub, Kindergarten).

“We had a tie for the best design, and therefore we awarded two cub scouts, Kira Dompierre (lion cub, Kindergarten) and Iker Santos (Webelos, fourth grade),” explained Cub Master Irma Rivera.

As part of the event, the Blue and Gold Banquets, traditional in Cub Scout pack troops, were also held. Both celebrated the anniversary of the founding of the BSA which was February 8, 1910, and the start of pup scouting in 1930.
