Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) joined the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Security, Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), and Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) in urging the Senate Appropriations Committee to include $500 million for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) humanitarian assistance program in legislation for fiscal year 2023.
Funds from the EFSP program would go to help local organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that would provide support services to migrants arriving in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Philadelphia, as well as cities throughout the United States. the southwestern border of the United States.
“As the federal government has called upon states, cities, and nonprofit organizations to provide significant additional funding for EFSPs,” the lawmakers wrote. “These funds are necessary to ensure shelter sites do not face financial hardship or are forced to halt operations, which would simply further shift the burden onto our local communities.”
