County awards Caritas grant to help immigrants from Port Chester and Ossining

Port Chester
A blue mobile food pantry will tour the streets of the villages of Port Chester and Ossining, thanks to receiving a grant from Westchester County.
Caritas of Port Chester, a neighborhood soup kitchen and food pantry for those in need, plus clothing and community emergency services, was awarded $287,500 to purchase the van, through a Community Development Block (CDBG) grant from the Department of Westchester Planning.
Caritas will begin using the mobile unit for home delivery of groceries, fresh produce and meals to those who cannot reach a food pantry in the communities of Port Chester and Ossining.
County Executive George Latimer said the purchase of the mobile food pantry is just one of many reasons it was so important to reinstate the CDBG program in Westchester.
“These funds can be used to improve infrastructure, housing needs and community development in our communities,” he said.
The grant will make it easier for residents who may be experiencing food insecurity to get the nutritious food they need, Latimer said.
The funds will be used for: The purchase of the food truck. Staff a logistics coordinator to manage the sourcing and allocation of fresh produce. A refrigerated container for truck storage. Shelves, mats and buckets for food storage inside the truck.
The vehicle will primarily serve Port Chester and Ossining, as well as other neighborhoods experiencing high levels of food insecurity.
