Kids’ classes include children’s dance, acting, and a ukulele workshop for tweens and teens
New Rochelle
The New Rochelle Public Library’s Winter/Spring 2023 programs offer a wide range of activities for infants, toddlers, preschool and elementary-age children, tweens, and teens. They are held at both the main branch of the New Rochelle Public Library, 1 Library Plaza, and the Huguenot Children’s Library, at 794 North Avenue. Events for teens are held daily in the teen room of the main library. Special events are also offered including children’s dance, acting, literacy workshops, and a beginner’s ukulele workshop for tweens and teens.
A Children’s Acting Workshop directed by Sandbox Theatre, is offered three Saturdays, January 21, February 28 and 4, at the Ossie Davis Theater (Main Library) from 9:30-11:00 am. Participants will receive instruction in the basics of performing, from projecting their voice to developing character and even learning all about improvisation. The class will be fast and fun, with an emphasis on comedy that will have everyone laughing. No experience required. Registration is required at bit.ly/KidsTheaterWkshp_01_2023.
A free African dance workshop led by professionals from the Bokandeye African Dance Troupe begins on Saturday, January 21, and runs for six weeks until Saturday, February 25. Children (4 years and older), adolescents and adults are invited to participate. The program will also meet in the Ossie Davis Theater in the main library from 2:00 p.m. m. to 3:00 p.m. m. It will culminate with a final performance for the public on Saturday, February 25 at 3:30 p.m. The workshop provides instruction in basic traditional West African dance movements. The Building a Love for Reading Literacy workshop for parents/caregivers of grades Pre-K-2 returns on February 14, 21 and 28, from 4:15-5:00 p.m. m. Educator Kim Block runs this special workshop and provides strategies on how to engage her son as you read together. Each session will be filled with creative activities and helpful tips to promote early literacy development.
Main Branch Children’s Room
Toddler programs run weekday mornings beginning Monday, January 23 and include Baby Rhyme Time, Baby Fingers: Stories, Songs and Signs, Bilingual Babies, Wiggle and Giggle with Dawny Dew, Let’s Groove Music, and Toddler Time. Afternoon programs for school-age children include Chess for Kids, Tween Book Discussions, Tween Club, Family Arts & Crafts, and Let’s Go, Legos. (Tween Book Discussions require registration, which begins four weeks before each discussion date. The first ten registrants will receive a free copy of the book! The Saturday schedule includes an 8-week session (January 28-March 18, 10:00am-10:30am) of Yoga Kids for ages 3-8. Taught by Budding Buddha instructors, children will learn calm and mindfulness while having fun practicing yoga.
Introduction to the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira for children ages 3-11 will begin on March 25 and will run for 8 weeks, culminating in a final performance on May 20. Disguised as a dance and performed with musical instruments and traditional Brazilian songs, participants will learn specific offensive and defensive moves and will be constantly on the move.
Huguenot Children’s Library (HCL)
Young children’s programs for the preschool crowd will take place at Huguenot Children’s Library (HCL) on weekday mornings starting January 23 and include Baby Rhyme Time, Storycraft, Animal Tales with Lavanya Misra, Wiggle and Giggle with Dawny Dew, STEAM Along with Toddlers, and Yoga Tots.
Monday afternoons from 3:30 p.m. m. to 4:30 p.m. m., talented New Rochelle High School National Honor Society students create art with children in grades PK-6. Each week, the children create a themed piece of art, guided by students. On Saturdays, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, children from 6 to 12 years old can learn or improve their game of chess. All skill levels are welcome.
Teen Programs
A Beginner Ukulele Workshop will be offered on Monday, January 30, February 6, and 13 from 4:00-4:45 and Monday, March 6, 13, and 20 from 4:00-4:45. Both workshops will be in the Teen Room Digital Media Lab in the Main Library and ukuleles will be provided.
