Westchester County has announced the completion of delivery of 106 40-foot hybrid-electric buses, marking a major milestone for the system, with a fleet now 88 percent hybrid or electric.
New Xcelsior electric hybrid heavy-haul buses built by New Flyer of America Inc., a leading North American bus manufacturer, will provide passengers with a quieter ride and improve air quality for the more than one million residents of Westchester.
The new bus seats 40 passengers and includes amenities such as a bike rack, USB charging ports at each seat, and a protective shield for the driver. Each bus cost $715,721 and approximately 70 percent was funded by the federal government. In addition to reducing emissions, they will provide the County with significant fuel savings.
“My administration is committed to reducing pollution and providing a greener future for all residents. The completion of this delivery represents the latest step our County is taking to meet its sustainability goals.”
Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation Commissioner Hugh Greechan said, “As buses have been left out of the fleet, we have made it a priority to purchase more energy-efficient ones that are better for the environment. atmosphere. Of the total fleet of 325 buses, only 40 diesel buses remain and hybrid or electric buses will replace them in the next two years.”
The county has six electric vehicle chargers within the Valhalla facility and plans to expand the charging infrastructure to include the central maintenance facility in Yonkers.
