Westchester County is offering employment to young people as young as 15, to work in pools and beaches
White Plains
Westchester County announced that registration is open for youth who want to work during the summer 2023 season.
It’s an outdoor job, where they can learn important life-saving skills and make new friends as lifeguards at county parks.
Applications are now available and applicants must be 15 years of age or older to apply.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “The responsibility of being a lifeguard is a tremendous life skill that teens and young adults will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I encourage those concerned to take the necessary steps to work as lifeguards at Westchester County pools and beaches this summer.”
Westchester County Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor explained, “Our lifeguards are an integral part of our Westchester County summers. They bring a level of safety to our pools and beaches and ensure that visitors have fun too.”
Applicants must possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid and Lifeguard CPR/AED certification or equivalent, and pass the Westchester County practical skills test. County parks offer training for new rangers, including oceanfront training for the option of patrolling at a pool or on the beach.
The Westchester Parks Department offers training for those interested in working. The next pre-test date is Sunday, January 8 at 1 p.m. at the Theodore Young Community Center, located at 32 Manhattan Ave. in White Plains, and the class will begin the same day. Registration is required. An additional pre-test is scheduled for Monday, January 9 at 9 a.m. at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, with the class taking place afterwards. Registration is required.
Applicants must be able to work at multiple locations, including Saxon Woods Pool in White Plains, Sprain Ridge Pool and The Brook at Tibbetts in Yonkers, Willson’s Waves Pool in Mount Vernon, as well as Croton Point Park Beach in Croton-on-Hudson and Glen Island Beach in New Rochelle if certified.
The Westchester County Parks Lifeguards are an award-winning team that received American Red Cross Best Vendor Awards in 2020 and 2021.
