Health Commissioner Urges Families to Schedule a Flu Shot and COVID Booster. Offering Pfizer COVID-19 boosters for kids ages 5-11 starting Friday, October 28.

Health Commissioner Dr Sherlita Amler said she “encourages parents to schedule their child’s booster as soon as possible. We anticipate an increase in COVID-19 cases after Halloween and through the upcoming holidays, just as we have experienced in recent years. These boosters will extend your family’s protection against severe symptoms of COVID-19 and help you avoid exposing more vulnerable family and friends.”

Flu season is here and families can also schedule flu shots at the same time at the Health Department Clinic in White Plains.

The Department of Health will offer both the flu vaccine and pediatric COVID-19 bivalent boosters by appointment, as follows:

• Friday, November 3 and 18, 1 p.m. m. to 3 p.m. m., at 134 Court Street, White Plains

• Thursday, November 3, Yonkers Riverfront Library, 2 p.m. at 6:30 p.m. m.

• Monday, November 14, 4 p.m. m. at 7 p.m. m. at 134 Court Street, White Plains

• Appointments for Fridays in December will be added later, so please check back.

Amler added that “combining vaccines is safe and it is more convenient to schedule both at the same time. Children often get multiple shots at the same time, and they are much less likely to miss a shot if they are given together. Vaccines for the flu and COVID-19 offer the best protection we have against these diseases, so the sooner you get vaccinated, the better.”

In the United States, flu activity is usually highest between December and February, but can last into May. A flu shot now provides protection throughout the season and can prevent illness or reduce the severity of flu symptoms. The vaccine becomes fully effective after about two weeks.
